From 2005 to 2009, I participated in the United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring as a staff member of United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area. This year, as my career path has moved more towards photography, I am no longer a staff member of United Way. However, I still very much wanted to participate as a volunteer! My good friend (and fellow photographer), Shaele Wood, is the Volunteer Center Director at United Way and spends nine months a year preparing for this day. Approximately 2,500 volunteers spent the day working on 246 projects at 116 agencies and schools across the United Way service area resulting in 15,000 hours of service amounting to over $300,000 value. Astonishing numbers by any account!
My involvement this year was limited to the Kickoff Breakfast Rally where I tried to capture the enthusiasm and spirit of both the United Way Staff and volunteers. Some of my favorite images are below as well as a quick slideshow of the morning. Shaele even caught a quick shot of myself with my mentor and good friend, Jim Carpenter of Gitchell’s Studios. Jim volunteers to photograph Day of Caring every year and always captures amazing images!
Please enjoy the photos and remember, even if you did not participate in this year’s Day of Caring, there are opportunities to volunteer in your community year round. Visit www.BeAVolunteer.info to search opportunities and find the perfect fit for you!
