This past year I had several clients and friends come to me and say “I really want to get a good DSLR camera this year. Can you tell me which one to buy?” And I must admit I love looking around for equipment and suggesting all different levels of DSLRs. But, I also truly believe it’s not necessary for you to have a DSLR to get some great digital images. Most notably, photographer Lee Morris illustrates this belief with his iPhone photo shoot, and as the saying always goes ‘the best camera is the one you have with you’.
The photos below were taken in 2004 when I back packed Europe. Hesitant to bring my Canon Elan 7 and carry film around for a month, I opted to travel armed with only my Canon Powershot A80. Over that month I shot a few hundred photos, some of which still hang on our walls at home!
So why am I rambling on about this now? Well it’s the middle of the winter and I’m avoiding the less fun tasks of filing, website updating, etc. Plus I just really want you to know you can shoot great photography with whatever camera you have! Furthermore, you can make simple edits to your photos with great free programs such as Gimp or Google Picasa. Yes, I did say free! So get out there and photograph your dog, your family, the morning frost, whatever you want! Have fun!
