With all of the advice a person can receive in their life, I feel one of the biggest statements that sticks with me is “you never know until you try”. One moment that will always stand out to me in this regard is one of my first days in Australia. (Wow, I’m feeling shockingly like Sophia in the Golden Girls telling you this: “Picture it…Geelong, Australia 2003.” :)) I was new to the country and had yet to make friends to go out with on a regular basis until one night a group invited me out. It consisted of fellow exchange students from Germany, Italy, Japan, and China. There wasn’t a whole lot of conversations going on in English, but I tell you what, throw in a few drinks and a club that plays 80’s pop songs…you would have thought we had known each other our whole lives! Today, eight years later I still manage to keep in touch with those friends…amazing! And just think of the great times I would have missed if I had skipped out that first night knowing it was going to be a little tricky at first.
But…I digress. My point is that while working my way into the photography business here in Charlottesville, I am constantly pushing myself to meet new people and try new projects. And I tell you, I’ve met some AMAZING people in this town (some of which you can link to from my ‘likes’ on my Facebook Fan Page)!
Just connecting through email, I spent Monday working with Jessica Derstine and Virginia Hamrick on a food photo shoot. We talked shop, shared tricks, and just had a great time. What’s better than sharing what you love with others, meeting new people, and learning new things? Enjoy!!
